A Message From SS&H on our Office and Coronavirus (COVID-19)

At Shepard Schwartz & Harris LLP, the health and safety of our employees and our clients is of paramount importance. For this reason, we are taking specific precautions to protect our staff and visitors during the current outbreak of Coronavirus. We are assessing the situation daily, remaining vigilant, and following all recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO), U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and local authorities. With confirmed cases reported in Chicago, we are considering the potential impact and how we can best protect our clients and staff, while still providing an unparalleled experience to both.

We want you to feel comfortable working with our firm during this important and critical time of year. The IRS recently announced federal payment deadlines have been extended to July 15th, 2020; however, the filing deadline remains April 15th, 2020.  Under the IRS notice, individuals can defer up to $1 million in payments for 90 days.  This $1 million includes both 2019 tax liabilities and 2020 first quarter estimates.  You can find additional information regarding payment relief information on our website in this link.  We also encourage you to visit https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus, which is a special section on the IRS website designated to help taxpayers, businesses and others affected by the coronavirus. This page will be updated as new information is available. 

Below, we’ve outlined how we are working to minimize potential risk as we work towards April 15th together:

Electronic options – To protect both our staff and our clients against virus spread, we want to remind you we have existing capabilities for information sharing using electronic options. While meeting with your tax advisor face-to-face can certainly alleviate stress around this time of year, we can accomplish much with telephone and electronic sharing. To provide us with documents, you can send items through either our client portal or Share Safe, available on our website. Additionally, we urge you to receive PDF versions of your tax returns for your records this year, rather than paper copies when possible.

Remote considerations – Please be assured that while we remain focused on the health and safety of our professionals and those around us, we also are focused on continued service to our clients. We have taken steps to make sure we can continue to deliver the level of quality, excellence and timeliness you are accustomed to from us during these unique circumstances.

Shepard Schwartz & Harris LLP is committed to a flexible work place, and our team members have the tools and technology which allow for effective remote work systems. The majority of our professional staff are currently working remotely, while our physical office remains open with reduced personnel maintaining the on-site daily operations.

In addition, we are encouraging our team members to have open dialogues with our clients to assess their comfort level with on-site visits to their location or ours during this challenging time. Any out-of-town travel of our employees for client visits will be determined on a case by case basis until further notice.
