Kathryn Hagensee Garlow

Kathy Garlow is a tax partner with Shepard Schwartz & Harris LLP where she specializes in income tax planning and compliance for privately owned businesses and their owners, particularly professional service entities.  Ms. Garlow prepares and reviews tax returns for partnerships, corporations, LLCs, foundations, individuals, trusts and estates, as well as estate and gift tax returns, payroll tax returns and sales tax returns.  Her clientele includes law firms, medical practices, architects, and interior design firms.  Examples of her work include:

• Partnership and personal tax compliance for several Chicago-based law firms.
• Income tax planning and compliance for pediatric, psychiatric and oncology practices and their physician owners/partners.
• Corporate tax and personal income tax compliance for a commercial building architect.
• Trust, family partnership, private foundation, gift and personal tax returns for high net worth individuals/couples.

In addition to her work on tax compliance matters, Ms. Garlow works with start-up companies – from inception, choosing the appropriate tax entity – to implementation, establishing a bookkeeping system and payroll process.  This work also continues with tax planning for each business owner as they balance their new business income tax return with their continuing personal income tax return.

With respect to professional activity, Ms. Garlow established and organizes the firm’s annual women’s networking initiative, which brings together clients, referral sources and other contacts. As a member of the membership committee of the Chicago Estate Planning Council, Ms. Garlow is spearheading a renewed drive to recruit new accounting profession members.  Additionally, she represents the firm as a member of the International Network of Accountants and Auditors (INAA) and is charged with monitoring discussion topics that would be relevant to the firm’s clients and professionals.  She also co-chaired the Chicago Bar Association Tax Law Committee for two years and speaks at seminars for lawyers and financial advisors on a variety of personal income tax return and non-profit organization topics.

Ms. Garlow oversees Shepard Schwartz & Harris’ Intern Training Program and the firm’s Continuing Professional Education Program. She was an intern at Shepard Schwartz & Harris in 1985 and joined the firm in 1987 after completing her undergraduate studies.
