Tom Keating is a tax manager with Shepard Schwartz & Harris LLP.  Mr. Keating advises privately held business owners and executives on tax controversy matters, specifically IRS investigations and audits.  His work includes:

  • Handling IRS and local taxing body audits and facilitating written correspondence with the IRS and state and local authorities. 
  • Preparing IRS and local taxing body correction notices.
  • Submitting IRS offers in compromise for clients with outstanding tax liabilities.

In addition to handling tax controversy matters, Mr. Keating advises clients on state and local taxation matters, including income taxes, sales and use taxes, and nexus issues.  He has extensive experience preparing and reviewing federal and state tax returns, including individual, fiduciary, corporate, partnership, estate, gift, payroll and sales tax returns.  He also prepares and reviews tax returns for retirement plans, not-for-profits and private foundations.  

Mr. Keating has written articles and lectured extensively on tax issues, particularly sales and use tax topics.  He has also participated in tax relief legislative efforts on behalf of manufacturers.  As a member of an industry advocate group, he worked to facilitate a change in Illinois law regarding sales/use taxes applied to the carpet industry. 

Mr. Keating worked at the firm during his college studies, preparing 1040 tax returns among other activities.  He formally joined the firm as a tax professional in 1986 after completing his undergraduate education.
