Kathy Garlow speaks on the IRS and Independent Contractor Issues

Kathy Garlow spoke at the January 13, 2010 meeting of the Society of Human Resource Professionals.  The presentation was entitled “Employers Beware: IRS on the War Path: the Issue of Employee versus Independent Contractor”.  The presentation covered the rules for determining worker classification.  Businesses use independent contractors to reduce payroll taxes and fringe benefit costs.  The IRS is implementing a National Research Program on Employment Taxes, causing the number of audits to increase in this area.  The session discussed the issues and made suggestions to help employers protect their worker status.
