When Independence Tube was building a new plant in Decatur, Alabama, the company didn’t have to give a lot of consideration as to the construction materials it would use.  “We used the best products we could buy – ours,” noted company president, Richard Werner.  The plant was constructed using the company’s steel tubing products, manufactured in Chicago and Marseilles, Illinois. With the new plant in Decatur, Independence Tube now has more than one million square feet of manufacturing space – capable of meeting the steel tubing needs of companies across North America. 

One of the unique aspects of the Decatur plant is its location.  Situated on the banks of the Tennessee River, the site planning required special consideration, including an unusually deep foundation into bedrock.  The structure supports seven overhead cranes each weighing up to 55-tons.

Independence Tube, founded by Dave Grohne in 1972, produces square and rectangular structural steel tubing – what the industry refers to as “HSS” or Hollow Structural Sections.  Modern Metals magazine called this material “one of the darlings of the construction industry” because of steel tubing’s structural versatility and economic applications for a wide variety of commercial and industrial construction projects, including office and agricultural buildings, warehouse and distribution centers, airport terminals, convention centers, retail shopping malls – even oil rigs. Quality is essential and the company has been awarded top-rated pipe and tube mill status by industry media.

Independence Tube materials are used for a wide array of applications – from trailer axles and hitches, to warehouse and bridge structural support, to highway applications including guide railings, median barriers and culvert railings.  The company even produces steel tubing used in the production of recreation equipment, such as basketball poles.
